All right. Be prepared for a rambling and unfocused problem. I've pulled this old laptop out from under the bed, got it all charged up and it's back in action as the primary distraction.
my imac is soooo fucked.
Software update has been pestering me for days, so I finally gave in and let it do it's thing. I'm thinking to myself "update software, play some eve, make dinner, play some eve, go to bed and wake up for mcds breakfast". Never shall it be so! My computer told me that some update didn't install properly, I remember it saying at least 3 things, one of them a firmware update, the other two I don't recall. I figure, oh, ok. Well, this is probably important, but I'll just restart to see if it fixes itself, if it doesn't I'll probably get the same error box and then I'll call apple.
I restart, and get the grey apple logo screen, with a perpetual little animated gear, spinning, spinning, gah.
It's like that for a while.
I power off, power on. Grey, apple & gear. BLAH.
I use my iphone to google up some stuff. I try holding shift down for safe mode. that's not happening. I look around for my install cds or something that came with the computer. They're not locatable. I struggle through the apple help site on that tiny little screen, I get a phone-call, I stay on hold. I'm thoroughly peeved I'm not flying around in my internet spaceship being blown up. I get a bro, he suggests the shift thing. he suggests the install cd thing. He suggests I hold command-S, which gets a rad CMI
/sbin/fsck -fy is entered, per instruction.
Takes about 13.5 minutes for it to run, it fixes some errors or something. I reboot. grey screen. I reboot holding command-S and run the identical command. 3.5 minutes this time, no errors. I reboot. Grey screen. Dude tells me that I'm going to need those cds, and that there's a possibility that I'd have to erase everything and install new.
WTFHFML.
I'm going to show up at the applestore tomorrow, to at least use their discs or whatever, maybe have someone who is hands-on figure some shit out or dangle it so that I won't lose my data (I'd be so bummed out).
I'm wondering if anyone has any idea what the hell happened?

You have a failed hard drive. Hope you have a backup. It might not be a partition failure, but you likely have enough reallocated sectors that it can't install updates or boot your OS. You can potentially get by with a re-install (archive/install if you're still on 10.5) without erasing your data, but that will likely only stall the inevitable total drive failure.
If you have a warranty and a backup, no problem, they'll fix it post-haste. If you have no warranty, prepare to spend 300-400 bucks through apple, or 100-200 through an ASP If you have no backup, prepare to spend between 0-1500 bucks to recover your data on top of whatever else I said above.
If you have an external hard drive and your system install disks, you can install a temporary system to an external drive and run your computer from the external to do some additional diagnostics, but it appears that you've already got plans to take it to an apple store. I can only pray the people you talk to are competent and know what a failed sector is.

The above advice is excellent! We are lucky to have these guys around. The below advice is terrible, do not follow it at any cost. Below advice is provided for entertainment purposes only.
But Devon, Devo, bro, this is what you do. Do you have a tenant's package insurance policy? If not, get one. Make sure you get Replacement Cost endorsement, schedule the imac, describe it as better than it was even, just make sure you tell your broker that you have the computer so he can either schedule or waive computer limitations if applicable. Then rob yourself, make a fake police report, and claim for a new computer. If executed correctly, you'll have a brand-spanking-new imac with all the trimmings in the mail. All for the low low cost of $500 and a little footwork.
Again, purely for entertainment purposes. I do NOT condone nor recommend the above actions

I'm not a fan of McDonald's.
I'm not much of a fan for fast food, actually, except when there's little or nothing else to eat and I want something to eat NOW.
I was going to suggest you get another hard drive and try installing on that and see if it worked. But you've already solved your original issue. So congrats and sorries and stuff. When I get a bad hard drive, I almost never wipe the original so if I ever need to pull more data, I can at least try.
I'm liking my contacts so far.

When you guys do your little chat thing hit me up so I can be there to tell Tony he's doing it wrong. :P
You would too! His drive actually was fine. He just had a jacked partition. Although they probably could have just reinstalled instead of wiping everything, it still got the job done.

I don't trust anyone more than myself.
Fuck yeah.
I fuckin' love McDonald's breakfast! Order of hot cakes, sausage biscuit, hash browns and a small OJ. I like the mcgriddle with bacon personally. And a sausage mcmuffin if I'm extra hungry.
You guys eat breakfast? Bunch of greedy fat-kids

Fat kids are great at rolling around in the mud.
Me, I prefer to jump around and laugh my head off.
