My daughter's two-year-old play mate and cousin was diagnosed with Leukemia last night. His bone marrow today will help the doctors identify what subtype he has.

My wife and I are bringing Subway sandwiches to his parents at the hospital, but we feel helpless and that we need to do something else. What can we do to show our support for their family, or what would you appreciate from your friends if your child were going through this?

Also, if you are the praying type, please include little Koda and his family in your prayers.

Middy, honestly, I don't know that there's anything you can actually *do* to help. Your actions aren't going to amount to much here. Make yourselves truly available. Don't just say to your friends: "call us if you need anything" but make sure you show up regularly. I'd also qualify that it's not going to be about what you say, but make sure that you listen.

The only way you could truly help was if one of you were a match to be a marrow donor. Other then that remain hopeful through it all and be a source of comfort to your loved ones.

Was just going to say that, Trekkie. Inless you find a perfect match, next best is to donate to Lukemia groups and participate in walks/fund raising missons.

Sorry to hear that, Middy. I wish the best to you and yours, you'll be in my thoughts.

Thanks for the advice -- I really appreciate it! We found out today that he has the most common and also most treatable form of leukemia (ALL, or Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Remission rates are near 90% after 3.5 years of chemo when a child as young as Koda is diagnosed, which is encouraging, although it is still a very long, expensive, and difficult road.

Thanks in particular for the advice to be available (what great advice -- now that Koda isn't going to be allowed in public places like stores and such when his counts are low, we should be frequently offering to babysit or do store-runs etc), be a source of comfort (I really like this -- this advice lends itself well to not just saying it, but doing things to try to ease the small things for them), and your kind words!

I love that I can ask you guys for this kind of advice -- its a little weird though that I'm more comfortable asking this on the clan-mac forum than calling up a sibling and asking their opinions! *shrug*

I have decided Koda probably needs a girlfriend more than me. Middy can help, being the local awesome guy.

Teach the little guy to be the best SC/BW player ever, that is, after yourself Middy \:\) He'll be lucky to be taught by the MASTER himself!

Offer to babysit so Mom and Dad can get out, take a break. If there are other siblings, offer to babysit them if there are long doctor appointments they have to take Koda on. Also, I'm going to second what Devon said and say probably just listening is what they're going to need more than anything.
