The big difference is that the phones you WANT are locked into with only one certain carrier that charges you extra just because you're on a "special" phone that uses more bandwidth has social value.
There's really no big difference between phones in my opinion. Sure, some can do more stuff. No big deal. They all have the same wireless communications modem (two different ones, actually, but no big deal) and some even support using a Wifi connection (that is, hooking up to the internet through your AirPort). You'll get charged more for using a phone that "uses more bandwidth" or is "more expensive to build and maintain", but in all reality... they're not that expensive to build, they don't use that much bandwidth really, and there's really very little difference in carriers anyways because your phone can roam.
Wireless services need an extreme overhaul.

I would advise you not to get one. Touch screen is such bullshit. I long for the days of the red button you could just hammer on 10+ times, dial the number, hit the green button and you're making a call.
Apple killed this genius, once standard, design.

I have cingular for my phone (Nokia E17x - http://www.freecontractphonedeal.co.uk/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/nokia-e71x.jpg ) and I have pretty reliable service most places I go. Every now and then I lose all bars completely and can't make any outgoing calls, but thats rare. Never having used verizon or any of the other carriers, I can't personally comment on other plans, but my friends who have verizon seem to have a lot more reliable service than I do. Only reason we stay with cingular is because our phone contracts (4 phones) are finished in different parts of the year, so my dad just resigns, opposed to slowly converting each phone to verizon.
And Tony - after playing with it all day yesterday I am getting much better with the keyboard. Not sure if it learns from you at all, but my biggest problem was hitting the wrong key (S instead of A, K instead of L, etc) so either it learned from me or I just got used to it, either way its pretty snazzzy.
Only reason I didn't get the iPhone is because of the data plan. My dad pays for my phone currently, and said there was so way in hell he'd pay another 30 a month for me to use internet. So I said screw it, i'm happy with the smart phone I have. You do lose some features on the touch though. There is no built in camera, microphone, or camera. So I can't use apps like... forget the name but the one where you let it listen to a song and it figures out what the song is. Also there is no bar code readers, so I can't use the cheap prices app.
Those things are just extra coolness, so i'm not sweating losing those to much.
Overall, i'm very happy with my touch. Also, orig I got the 8gb, so I went to the store to bump up to the 16, and to my surprise they don't make the 16's anymore, and gave me the 32 for the same 100$ that it woulda cost to get the 16. So it turned out pretty good. I feel bad for all the smucks that bought the 16.

Mobile Me hasn't been without outages either. The media just hypes up a BlackBerry Internet Service outage because people use them for things other than time wasting

I have a touch that I got free with my macbook last summer. I love it. I've dropped it, soaked it in water, and gotten it covered in salt, and it works like a charm. Apps are fun, especially beer pong, deer hunt, and truth or dare. Actually, truth or dare is kinda dumb, but on the whole it works great. A+ purchase!
Plus the whole music thing is cool.
