I am going to purchase one of the new imacs. But which one?

Since I'm not as tech-savvy as a lot of you, do you have any suggestions? I will be using the computer for playing starcraft 2 with ya'll.

For starters, I'm pretty sure I will get the larger 24" model instead of the 20"
Do you guys think the 260mhz difference in the 24" models to be significant enough to shell out the extra $200?
Should I pay to upgrade from 2gigs to 4gigs of memory? Or should I purchase the ram elsewhere and pay to have it installed later? The two extra gigs cost $200
Should I splurge for the upgraded video card? Is the geforce880 noticeably better than the ATI Radeon2600? The geforce costs $150 more.

Right now I'm thinking of going with the 24" 2.8ghz with 4gigs of ram and the geforce gpu

What say you!

Go with the GeForce upgrade for sure, go with the 3 ghz processor if you can afford it, as for the RAM, buy it somewhere else and install it yourself. Doesn't void warranty, it's listed as "User Installable".

Though, it would be wise, if you're purely interested in SC2, to wait until they release the System Requirements before purchasing a new computer. Figure out exactly what you'll need before spending the money.

Don't jump the gun on buying any computers imo. Starcraft 2 is still a ways off.
Intel is rolling out chips faster than apple has been used to in the past so they're upgrading their machines more often (and more predictably) than before.
Granted, this iMac upgrade is heftier than was expected to many. But what JD said was spot on, definitely no matter what you do get a model that can get the 512 v-card. The processor and display aren't as big of a deal as the video card for gaming.

That top end model is as close as apple has gotten to a gaming rig in a while though.

Don't buy apple ram. Even if you get ram that dies on you and you have to replace it, it'll still cost less than buying apple's ram.

The problem with buying ram later is the fact that in order to go from 2 to 4 gigs, you have to remove the two 1 gig chips that come in the machine, you don't just buy a 2nd 2 gig chip.

totally wrong, my mini plays games better with a 21" LCD than it ever did with that old 19" Apple CRT circa 1996

you can play any game on an old machine if you've got a big enough monitor

If that were true I'd be playing EVE right now.
But I'm not.
