So I have Boot Camp up and running, but the Boot Camp Manager app on Windows won't work. It doesn't launch on startup anymore, and when I try to launch KbdMgr manually, it "encounters a problem" and quits immediately. Windows still works fine, but I can't use, e.g., the volume keys. I tried uninstalling Boot Camp + all the Apple drivers and reinstalling, to no avail. I can't find anything online except problems with some antivirus software I don't use. Any suggestions?

Uninstall the antivirus software.

What version of Windows are you running and how legit is it?

By "that I don't use," I meant "that I never installed." I don't have the antivirus software that has problems with Boot Camp.

I'm running XP Pro SP2, and it's, uh, let's just say I won't be running WGA anytime soon.

The volume keys, etc, won't work until you load the bootcamp drivers. If you have a 10.5 disk, just pop that baby in while booted to windows and it'll take care of you.

Or am I not understanding you and you already did that and it's bugging out now?

I installed the Boot Camp drivers. The Boot Camp Manager utility (which also includes the soft keymapping solution Apple uses for the function keys) won't start. All the hardware works; I just can't use my volume, etc. keys. AFAIK the Boot Camp Manager doesn't do anything else I care about, but not having use of volume keys is pretty annoying.

Tyr - I'm not about to buy new software and completely reconfigure my setup just to resolve a small software issue. Virtualised Windows would be almost entirely useless to me, anyway; the only reason I use Windows is for gaming, and virtualisation is a substantial performance hit over BC. Annoying as it is to use BC without my function key hardware controls, it's a lot better than a virtualisation solution anyway.

virtualbox is open source and free and works pretty well for what i use it for. are you running Tiger or Leopard as your Mac OS?

virtualbox seems pretty neat, but it's not at all useful for me. I have no interest in running Windows on top of OSX. Boot Camp is definitely the only method of running Windows that is worth my consideration.

I use Leopard.

Well there goes that thought. I was thinking maybe if you were using the beta of BC on Tiger then something there might've gotten fowled up.
