I'm in the process of getting Boot Camp set up on my MBP. I want to get an external drive ASAP, as this little internal drive was barely big enough with only one OS on it.

If I attach an external drive, will both Windows and OSX be able to read/write to it with no trouble? Do I need to do anything special to make sure the drive is formatted correctly? I know that a Windows-formatted iPod will work in either environment (although a Mac-formatted one will not). Any suggestions on a 500GB-ish model?

The only way both Windows and OS X can read/write to it is if it's in the FAT32 format. Keep in mind that Windows has a 32GB limit when formatting drives. To use the external for both make sure you format it using Disk Utility in OS X first. Other than that you don't need any special drivers for it in Windows. A complicated route is to format it using NTFS. Out of the box OS X can only read an NTFS formatted drive, not write to it. There are 3rd party NTFS kernel extensions that add writing support to OS X.(As I said, complicated.) For the drive itself I would recommend FireWire 400/800 over USB 2.0; though most external cases these days come with multiple connection options. As always, you can't go wrong with NewEgg.
