I have an 80 GB 5th gen iPod. It will only charge from a wall adaptor, and will not charge when plugged into my USB. I've tried USB 1.0 and 2.0 of various machines, all the same thing.

When I plug it in, the battery indicator displays full. As soon as I unplug it, the indicator reverts to the level (or below) that it was at before I plugged it in.

Therefore, when I am fully re-syncing it, I must load about half the content, unplug it from the USB and let it charge from the wall (since having the HDD spin while it's syncing and not charging eats the battery fast), and then continue syncing it again after it has charged.

I have also tried different cables. Do the pins that carry power differ between the USB adaptor and the wall adaptor? That would explain it if I had bent pins on my iPod, however I take immaculate care of this thing and have no idea how a pin could have gotten bent.

The battery works fine. It lasts for hours under normal use. It just only charges from the wall charger, not the USB.

I haven't even used it liberally while I've had it.

And I'd take it to the genius bar, but most of them hadn't even looked at a mac prior to their two week cupertino vacation.

It's so depressing how downhill the genius program went.

that might be a bit harsh. I've never had a problem there.

Have you tried charging it on a different port or different computer? It's possible, by your description, that your USB isn't supplying enough power.

Yes, tried the USB1 on my Powermac G4, the USB2 on my Powermac G4 (sonnett card), the USB on my iBook G4, the USB on my iMac G5, etc..

All the same deal. I just charged it last night in the wall charger and now it has a full charge. Had I left it in my USB plug, it'd be saying 'low battery' right now.

I don't know Tony. Have you attempted to charge it via USB from another computer?

Tony, I say take it to the Genius Bar. Worst case scenario, they give you a new iPod.

Worst case scenario is I buy a new iPod actually, since mine is several months out of warranty at this point.

So I solved it.

In addition to my charging problem, there were to other small things with my iPod that I disregarded but apparently were related.

Firstly, my select button was depressed, ie it felt lower than it should be. It felt like it was pushed in all the time and didn't have that click feel when you pushed it down. It still worked, however, so I disregarded it.

I also had a mystery dent on my front cover. Now I take immaculate care of my iPod, it hasn't been out of it's case for probably more than 10 minutes of the 1.5 years I've had it. This wasn't even a dent. It was a dimple, a dimple pushing out from the inside.

Finally, pulling my hair out looking for answers on the internet as to why it would sync but not charge through USB, I took the damn thing apart to see if I could at least fix my button. I get to the inside, and the little glued on pad that holds the button up has slid out of place, as if the glue melted and it but button just slid along with it. Confused, I fixed this and put it back together.

Great, now it doesn't even mount or sync. It still doesn't charge either. It's WORSE than it was before. So I take it apart again, and look at the back of the dimple. Thats when I realized what happened. The back side of the dimple was a melted blob of plastic. On the logic board beneath the dimple, there was an actual burn on the logic board, right where the USB power controller was.

I replaced the logic board, and now it works fine.

Now, I don't know if I just had some bizzare bad luck, or if this is similar to what has been happening to a lot of 5th gen iPods since the most recent iPod update. Here are some pictures, and I'm going to put this info on discussions.apple.com to see if maybe other people are noticing similar dimples or button malfunctions.

edit: In addition to these shitty pictures, I forgot to take a picture of the inside of the cover where the more obvious plastic melt was. oops.
